Fortnite Arenas: the room’s centre is no longer a safe overtime plan

Arenas 42.40 moved the storm’s endpoint and temporarily reduced Ranked lobby sizes. Here is what changed—and why Ranked Duos and tournament rules need separate readings.

Fortnite Arenas no longer sends every overtime storm to the middle of the room. In the 15 October 2026 update, Epic changed the cube-shaped storm so its endpoint varies each round and can be anywhere inside the Combat Room. It also brought all Combat Rooms back into use.

That removes a predictable part of a rematch. Knowing a room still helps, but occupying its centre no longer means you have already claimed the final safe position. The closing storm, rather than a memorised centre point, determines where the fight has to finish.

Same room, different finish

Epic’s 42.40 Arenas notes contrast the new behaviour with the first version: overtime previously ended in the centre and ran in only a limited selection of rooms. The revised endpoint works across the restored room pool.

This is a change to Arenas Combat Rooms, not a new Battle Royale storm rule. Epic describes it as bringing Arenas closer to the moving-endpoint behaviour of Battle Royale and Reload.

The update also gave each Combat Room a name. That provides a more precise reference when discussing a fight with a partner: the room is identifiable even when its overtime finish changes.

Ranked matches are smaller while Epic works on performance

The same update temporarily reduced the number of players in Ranked:

  • Ranked Solos: 12 players, down from 16.
  • Ranked Duos: eight players—four duos—down from 16 players.

Eight players in Duos means four teams, not eight teams. These are the Ranked lobby sizes stated in the update; they are not a substitute for the rules of a separate tournament.

Epic says it also rebuilt the in-game scoreboards to make them lighter after identifying an effect on server performance. The developers were targeting mid-November for another round of optimisations. That is a development target, not an exact release date or a promise that the temporary lobby sizes end then.

Two leaderboards answer different questions

The Stadium now contains a Global Ranked Leaderboard and a session-based leaderboard for the current match. One places the player in the wider Ranked competition; the other tracks the match being played.

The weapon list in the 15 October post is not the latest Arenas rotation: Epic published another loot-pool update on 23 October. Use that later post for weapon changes rather than carrying the original 42.40 inventory into practice.
