Scroll-wheel pickup no longer has the same speed advantage in Fortnite. Epic changed how quickly floor items can be collected one after another, bringing pickup speed closer across input methods. The change was documented with the 1 October Fortnitemares update, not a new patch released today.
It matters most when two players arrive at the same loot. A mouse-wheel bind previously offered a significant speed advantage, according to Epic. The developer says the revised system puts more emphasis on positioning and timing rather than hardware or binds.
A faster bind is not the whole race
In its v42.30 community notes, Epic describes pickup speed as “more consistent across input methods.” That is narrower than promising identical pickup behaviour on every device.
The notes do not publish a new pickup interval or say that scroll-wheel pickup has been disabled. You can separate the two questions: whether a bind is comfortable to use, and whether it still gives the old collection-speed advantage. The update addresses the latter.
For a contested chest, reaching the items and being ready to interact now carry more weight than relying on a rapid sequence of wheel inputs.
The game also prioritises loot you can use
A second change in the same update affects multiple items in your direct line of sight. Fortnite now prioritises items you can use, rather than first picking ammo or resources that are already full, or consumables for which you already have a full stack.
That makes inventory state part of understanding a crowded loot pile. A full ammo type and a usable item are no longer simply competing on the old priority rules.
The two changes work on different parts of looting: one governs how quickly consecutive pickups happen; the other affects which eligible item gets priority when several are in view.
Check movement binds if they changed between matches
The same notes list a separate PC fix for Forward and Backward movement keys rebinding themselves between matches. If those controls changed unexpectedly, inspect the current assignments before replacing a whole settings profile. Epic describes that behaviour as a bug, not a deliberate reset of your preferred controls.
For the wider PC tournament checklist, see our Secure Boot, TPM and IOMMU guide. Those entry requirements are separate from the looting and input changes above.
