CS2 demo review: you can now move the camera while the round is paused

Valve’s October replay update makes free and chase cameras usable during a paused demo. The practical gain is separating the position you want to inspect from the moment you want to study.

CS2’s free and chase cameras now work while a demo is paused, making it easier to inspect a position without letting the round move on. Valve’s mid-October replay update also changed camera controls to click-and-drag and added a progress bar for demo downloads.

For a player reviewing a death or a team checking its spacing, the useful change is simple: stop at the relevant moment first, then inspect the scene. You no longer need the action to keep running just to use those two camera modes.

Freeze the decision, then change the view

Valve’s update notes list free and chase camera support during paused demos together with fixes for minor issues when seeking to another point in the file. The update’s Steam timestamp is 14 October 2026 at 23:02 UTC, which was 01:02 CEST on 15 October in Stockholm; the official blog displays it under 15 October.

A useful review sequence is to pause immediately before an engagement, inspect where the nearby players are positioned, then return to playback to see how the situation develops. Free-camera information is a review aid: it can show positions the player could not see in the live round. Judge the decision against the player’s own view and available information, not just the revealing overview.

The new download progress bar helps distinguish a replay still arriving from one ready to inspect. Valve describes the seeking changes as fixes for minor issues, not a guarantee that every recording or playback problem has disappeared.

Missing chat is not the same as a broken replay

There is a separate limitation worth knowing when a demo appears to be missing conversation. In its 10 September update, Valve said chat is encrypted in demo files under the same rules as CS:GO:

  • Team chat is no longer readable during demo playback.
  • Global chat is readable only when the demo is played through the in-game Watch interface.

Changing the camera does not recover team chat. A recording can therefore be useful for positioning and timing while still lacking that part of the team’s communication.

Round backups are a server setting, not a camera feature

The mid-October update also made round backup files require the game-server startup flag -allow_round_backup_files. That is relevant to people running match servers; it is separate from downloading and viewing a demo.

Do not add that flag to a player’s launch options expecting it to unlock replay cameras. Valve explicitly identifies it as a server startup requirement for round backups.
