Apex Legends’ Cipher update reworks E-District Night’s lighting around a competitive problem: distinguishing an opponent from the city behind them. Respawn’s November 2 patch notes describe brighter deep shadows, more local light sources and less visual clutter for Season 31, which begins today, November 3, 2026.
E-District Night is in the new Ranked and public-match rotations, alongside Storm Point and Broken Moon. The visibility pass therefore affects one of the three listed Ranked maps, not just a limited-time playlist.
Less contrast between bright streets and dark corners
Respawn says it has reduced the extreme gap between direct and ambient lighting. Lifting the deepest shadows is intended to make enemy silhouettes more visible in low-light areas, while extra practical light fixtures make illumination appear to come from the streets and buildings themselves.
The studio has also increased the budget for shadow-casting lights. That is a rendering change to how characters and structures sit in the scene, not a promise of higher frame rates.
Simpler signs, clearer silhouettes
E-District’s colour-correction pass has been reworked to sharpen small-scale contrast while preserving the city’s atmosphere. Building and advertising-panel colours are being simplified to reduce high-frequency visual noise behind players.
Together, those changes target the background as much as the character: an illuminated opponent can still be hard to read when signage and building detail compete for attention. Respawn describes the intended result as silhouettes standing out more clearly against the city.
Exposure and fog changes apply across maps
The patch also includes engine-wide readability updates. Respawn is standardising world-lighting values and applying a lighting-and-material pass to geometry and signage, aiming for more consistent character contrast between environments.
Auto-exposure adaptation is being slowed down to limit abrupt brightness shifts during fights. Fog within playable spaces has been reworked to preserve important sightlines while keeping a sense of depth, and local lighting grids have been rebalanced for performance and readability.
Alongside that rendering work, Respawn reports 99 targeted map quality-of-life fixes, with particular attention to Storm Point, Olympus and World’s Edge. These address sticky collisions, geometry holes and unintended hiding spots. That maintenance list is broader than the three-map Ranked rotation; Olympus and World’s Edge appearing in the fixes does not put them into Cipher’s listed Ranked pool.
